Yerba Madre

What is Yerba Madre?

Yerba Madre is more than just a beverage brand—it’s a celebration of Mother Earth and the vibrant energy of the yerba mate plant. Rooted deeply in South American tradition, this project honors the life-giving power of the yerba mate leaf and embraces the role of “madre” in nurturing a thriving yerba mate movement. Originally known as Guayakí, Yerba Madre has been sharing the culture and benefits of yerba mate since the mid-90s, building a community that spans continents and generations.

Main Benefits of Yerba Madre

Yerba Madre offers a unique, natural boost that’s both smooth and invigorating. Here’s what makes it stand out:

  • Provides a smooth energy boost without the jitters
  • Can improve focus and mental clarity
  • Contains a natural blend of caffeine (like coffee), theobromine (like chocolate), and polyphenols (like green tea)
  • Certified regenerative, organic, and fair trade ingredients that support people and the planet
  • Available in traditional steeped leaves and vibrant sparkling drinks flavored with real fruit juice

Commitment to Regeneration and Sustainability

Yerba Madre isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about regeneration. The project goes beyond minimizing harm by actively making a net-positive impact on the planet and its people. This means supporting the regeneration of priority ecosystems, including the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. Their approach tackles climate, water, waste and packaging, forests and biodiversity, and regenerative agriculture head-on. It’s a bold vision that aims to heal the earth while producing clean energy through yerba mate.

Strengthening Communities Through Yerba Mate

At its core, Yerba Madre is about people. The project supports the livelihoods and well-being of producers, local communities, and customers alike. This includes a strong focus on human rights, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. By honoring yerba mate culture and promoting fair working conditions, health, and nutrition, Yerba Madre builds a foundation of trust and respect. It’s a movement that fosters friendship, service, and environmental stewardship—values that have been part of the journey since the beginning.

The Story Behind Yerba Madre

The story began when co-founder Alex Pryor left Argentina to study food science at Cal Poly University. In 1996, he introduced yerba mate to David Karr, a Californian who instantly connected with the energizing properties and cultural heritage of the drink. Together, they dreamed of creating a business that could be a force for positive change. Fast forward to 2025, the company officially changed its name from Guayakí to Yerba Madre, keeping the same regenerative vision alive for nearly 30 years. From loose leaf to cans and bottles, their products carry the spirit of the Semillas and their commitment to regeneration.

Project Impact and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – promoting clean energy and nutrition

A Global Community Fueled by Yerba Mate Culture

Yerba Madre’s reach extends worldwide, connecting people through the shared love of yerba mate. The team remains privately held, with offices and warehouses around the globe, never losing sight of their vision to share this vibrant culture. Whether it’s through traditional gourds and bombillas or sparkling drinks, the project invites everyone to “come to life” with clean energy and a commitment to regeneration. It’s a movement that’s just getting started—and it’s fueled by passion, purpose, and a deep respect for the planet and its people.

What Yerba Madre actually does

Yerba Madre, formerly known as Guayakí, is a yerba mate company founded in 1996 that rebranded in 2025 to better reflect the drink’s cultural heritage. The company has worked with the Añ;ché Kué Tuvy Community since 2002 and has been B Corp certified since 2007, one of the first 82 companies to achieve the certification.

Where the regenerative sourcing shows up

  • South American sourcing: yerba mate grown in partnership with communities in Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina
  • Direct distribution: a self-owned distribution arm, Yerba Mate Co., launched in 2016
  • Reforestation: a native tree-planting program across South and North America, starting in the Atlantic Forest

Proof, not just claims

170,816native trees planted, as of August 2026
300,000tree target for the reforestation program

The tree count is tracked toward a stated 300,000-tree commitment, part of the company’s broader work with the Añché Kué Tuvy Community, a partnership now running more than two decades.

Why this belongs on a sustainability directory

Yerba Madre’s reforestation program targets the Atlantic Forest specifically, one of the most degraded and biodiverse forest ecosystems in South America, giving it a direct connection to SDG15 (life on land) through a live, trackable tree count rather than a one-time offset purchase. Its two-decade relationship with the Añché Kué Tuvy Community also supports SDG12 (responsible consumption and production) by keeping sourcing tied to a specific, named community rather than an anonymous commodity supply chain.
