What is Lebiu?
Lebiu means “lightness” in Sardinian, a name that perfectly captures the natural essence of cork—the star material in an innovative upcycling journey. This project transforms what was once waste into valuable resources, giving birth to a new generation of bio-based materials. Tradition meets technology here, creating a circular, plant-based supply chain that not only reduces environmental impact but also adds value all along the way—from the tree right to the consumer.
The Main Benefit: Waste to Wear
Lebiu’s mission is simple yet powerful: turning waste into wearable stories. Every sheet, slab, or finished product carries:
- The tactile memory of craftsmanship
- The precision and replicability of cutting-edge technology
- A unique narrative rooted in a local and traceable supply chain
This blend offers more than just a functional material—it’s a story you can wear, touch, and share. Plus, it’s cruelty-free, plant-based, and becomes a true identity piece.
The Story Behind Lebiu
The journey started back in 2000 when Fabio Molinas helped his grandfather in a small cork production factory, turning cork waste into artistic pieces like sculptures and household items. Fast forward to 2012, Fabio began experimenting with cork powder and natural resins during a Product Innovation master’s program, creating the first prototype called “Leather for Vegetarians” using a domestic oven and food-grade adhesives.
By 2021, after years of R&D, this concept evolved into CORSKIN™, a recycled cork-based material under the Lebiu brand. Alessandro Sestini joined as CEO, pushing the startup to innovate with plant resins and production waste. And in 2024, Lebiu officially launched Corskin, the first recycled cork-based material from Sardinia.
Core Values Driving Lebiu
Lebiu stands on a foundation of strong values that guide every step of the process:
- Carbon Neutral: Production follows natural rhythms with a low environmental footprint.
- Traceability: Every stage, from forest to final transformation, is verifiable.
- Ethics: Materials are cruelty-free and plant-based, respecting all living beings.
- Responsible Innovation: Advanced, replicable technologies always consider sustainability.
Environmental Sustainability at the Core
Lebiu materials come from cork industry waste processed in an aqueous solution, resulting in a bio-material that rivals animal leather in resistance. This approach offers a sustainable alternative aligned with today’s environmental standards. It’s not just about making something new—it’s about making something better for the planet.
Lebiu’s Impact on Sustainable Development Goals
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 15: Life on Land
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Supporting Rural Development and Cultural Heritage
Lebiu deeply values the local community, helping cork companies reinvent themselves with sustainability in mind. Protecting cultural heritage is just as important—ancient cork crafting techniques passed down through generations are part of Sardinia’s identity. These traditions promote social values like inclusion, respect, and the priceless “know-how” that keeps the community connected and thriving.
