sustainable watches

Mondaine Watch is making significant strides in sustainability with its innovative Essence watch and climate-neutral practices. The company uses renewable materials and has implemented eco-friendly initiatives, including a photovoltaic rooftop installation at its factory. Their commitment to sustainability is further highlighted by their climate neutrality declaration and involvement in forest conservation projects. This post explores…

Mondaine Watch: Committed to Sustainable Timepieces

Mondaine Watch: Steps Towards Sustainable Watches

At first, E2 supported the launch of “Essence” — a wristwatch with a case made of one-third renewable material, a band crafted from gum, and packaging cleverly designed so customers can reuse it as mobile phone protection. In 2019, E2 took part in the opening event for the large photovoltaic rooftop installation at Mondaine’s factory in Biberist (SO). Then, during 2020, E2 calculated Mondaine Group’s eco- and climate-balance. By November, Mondaine declared their watches climate neutral: all climate gas emissions from materials, packaging, and the group’s own sites are compensated through a great forest project in Indonesia (fairventures). At the same time, Mondaine Group published its first sustainability report. Zürich’s leading newspaper NZZ even published a detailed article about it.

Main Benefits of Mondaine’s Sustainability Efforts

Here are some key figures and facts that stand out:

  • Essence watch case consists of 1/3 renewable material
  • Packaging doubles as mobile phone protection
  • Photovoltaic rooftop installation at factory in Biberist (SO)
  • Climate neutrality declared in 2020
  • Compensation through a forest project in Indonesia (fairventures)
  • First sustainability report published by Mondaine Group
  • Coverage by Zürich’s leading newspaper NZZ

Ernst Schweizer AG: Sustainability at the Core

Ernst Schweizer AG is all about embedding sustainability into every dimension of its strategy and management system. E2 has been consulting Ernst Schweizer AG for more than 20 years, helping implement tools like a sustainability balanced scorecard, company ecobalance, and award-winning sustainability reports. It’s a long-term partnership that’s really paid off.

Sunstar Hotels: Pioneers in Climate Neutrality

Sunstar Hotels underwent a strategy review process with coaching from E2, including sustainability aspects, back in 2007/08. They developed a Climate Neutrality concept and became the first hotel chain worldwide to achieve climate neutrality for all its activities in 2008. Since then, they’ve been calculating their Greenhouse Gas emissions every year. Talk about leading by example!

ibex fairstay: A Leading Sustainability Label for Hotels

The “ibex fairstay” sustainability label was developed for hotels and introduced to the market with E2’s involvement. According to an analysis by the University of Lucerne, ibex fairstay ranks among the four globally leading sustainability labels for the accommodation industry. Around 50 Swiss hotels and hostels proudly carry the “ibex” label. Beyond sustainable management, ibex enables hotels to receive the Swiss tourism quality label (Q, QQ, QQQ). The certification aligns—though simplified—with ISO 9001, 14001, and SA8000 standards, including sector-specific performance targets. For over a decade, a dedicated office manages the label, and E2 remains on the certification board.

ibex fairstay: E2’s Contributions

Here’s a quick rundown of E2’s role in the ibex fairstay journey:

  • Development of the hotel sustainability label (1999-2001; initially under the German name “Steinbock”)
  • Marketing efforts from 2002 to 2006
  • Member of the certification committee since 2002
  • Integration of the EU eco-label for accommodation (2006/7)
  • Integration of Swiss quality label for hotels ‘QQQ’ (2006/7)
  • Methodology updates in 2006, 2009, and 2012

Project Impact: Sustainable Development Goals Linked to These Projects

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy (photovoltaic rooftop installation)
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth (sustainable management and reporting)
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (innovative sustainable products like Essence watch)
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production (eco-labels and climate neutrality)
  • SDG 13: Climate Action (climate gas emission calculations and compensation)
  • SDG 15: Life on Land (forest project in Indonesia for carbon compensation)

Additional Projects: Salecina and Schützen Rheinfelden AG

Beyond the big names, E2 also facilitated a strategy workshop for Salecina’s management team and committed guests back in 2014. Meanwhile, Schützen Rheinfelden AG received coaching support during the concept development for their first sustainability report in 2010/11. These projects might be smaller in scale but show E2’s commitment to fostering sustainability across diverse sectors.
