What is the Project?

Authentic to the past. Respectful to the future. Distinct designs for all seasons and situations. That’s the simple formula behind creating the most comfortable wool footwear. Drawing on 10,000 years of human experience with wool – a “super fiber” known to be warm in winter and cool in summer – the project combines traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Wool is soft, cozy, antibacterial, water- and odor-resistant, washable, and incredibly flexible. This unique material, strong as steel yet gentle against your skin, remains clean and fresh even through daily wear… This heritage meets innovation in every stitch, keeping both art and function in perfect balance.

Main Benefit

Key features and figures that showcase this project’s distinct advantage include:

  • 10,000 years of wool heritage with a super fiber that naturally adapts to seasons
  • Wool’s antibacterial, odor-resistant, water-resistant, and washable properties
  • Sustainable, responsible production using locally sourced materials and efficient resource management
  • B-Corp certified with an exceptional score of 99.5, reflecting a balance between purpose and profit
  • A design approach that respects artisanal heritage while adding a modern twist for everyday comfort

Heritage and Innovation

The project’s roots are deeply embedded in history and culture. In 2011, while in Russia for Christmas, Galina’s parents presented a pair of Valenkis – traditional felted footwear once loved by Russian Czars and laborers alike. These shoes, renowned for their comfort and warmth even in extreme temperatures down to -40°C, sparked the idea of updating their look while honoring their artisanal heritage. It is a story of discovery and inspiration, where a traditional design met the curiosity of new ideas, leading to the creation of slipper designs that are both comforting and timeless.

Global Journey and Creativity

A chance encounter with different cultures further shaped the project’s dynamic journey. Shortly after the Russian inspiration, Dan’s job sent the founders to Jakarta, Indonesia. Immersed in a foreign culture, the idea of blending tradition with a new exploratory twist took root. In a small kitchen, eight pairs of felted wool slippers were painstakingly made – eight hours per pair. While some friends were unimpressed and urged abandoning the effort, other like-minded adventurers saw the potential. This creative leap eventually led to a breakthrough at ISPO, one of Europe’s biggest retailer tradeshows, where 700 pairs were ordered almost immediately… a true testament to blending global influence with local expertise.

Local Impact in Nepal

The story did not stop at creative endeavors abroad. At the end of 2014, a significant turn occurred when Dan quit his job, prompting a return to Switzerland and the establishment of a factory in Nepal. The decision was fueled by the locals’ renowned felting know-how and the opportunity to make a positive socio-economic impact on the local community. Even as Nepal faced a massive earthquake, the resilience and determination of the Nepalese people reinforced that the choice was right. A blossoming local industry was born out of necessity and passion, further amplified by a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015 that supported the launch of slippers combining traditional pedigree with modern Swiss design.

Sustainable Design and Responsible Production

Sustainability and responsible production are woven into the very fabric of this project. Wool, being nature’s ultimate renewable resource, demonstrates its capacity to be recycled and biodegraded after its lifecycle is complete. The production process ensures that no harm comes to the sheep, as they naturally grow more wool every season. This environmentally conscious approach is reinforced by using sustainable materials produced and sourced locally, and through production practices that efficiently manage natural resources. The project’s commitment to a greener future is evident, making every pair of footwear not just a fashion statement but also an eco-friendly endeavor that supports a healthier planet.
