Arrecife Systems: Harnessing Ocean Waves and Currents for Clean Energy

Arrecife Systems captures the power of ocean waves and currents, transforming them into electricity. Their innovative turbine design ensures efficient energy generation while maintaining reliability in harsh marine conditions. This technology not only maximizes energy output but also supports global sustainability goals, making it a vital solution for clean energy production.

What the Project Is

WE CAPTURE THE WAVES’ & CURRENTS AND TRANSFORM IT INTO ELECTRICITY. The Arrecife wave-power system simulates the behavior of a coral reef through turbines, harnessing the waves’ power and transforming it into electricity. This project delivers power by exploding waves and capturing at least twice as much power for the same size wave compared to technologies that simply ride the wave.

Main Benefit

Key figures and facts include:

  • FIRST PATENTED TECHNOLOGY THAT OBTAINS ENERGY FROM WAVES, CURRENTS AND WIND.
  • Captures at least twice as much power as conventional buoy technologies.
  • Expertise in turbine design enables versatile solutions adapting to different wave energy concepts.
  • Modular design maximizes energy generation and overall efficiency.
  • Automatically submerges when large waves appear, ensuring continuous energy production.

Innovative Turbine Design

The expertise in turbine design has enabled the development of versatile solutions capable of adapting to different wave energy concepts, maximizing efficiency in every application. This innovative approach captures both the power of waves and the force of currents.

Harnessing Ocean Power

The system opposes the wave on the surface, much like a coral reef, and is stabilized by its weight. This design ensures that energy from exploding waves is efficiently captured, providing a robust alternative to other technologies.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

With conventional buoy technology, smaller devices are destroyed by large waves and larger buoys are destabilized by their own weight… In contrast, the Arrecife system automatically submerges when large waves appear, ensuring that energy production continues reliably even in harsh conditions.

About the curator

Arnaud Michel is the founder and curator of Keys for Tomorrow. In 2014, his master’s thesis on community currencies and sustainable development won the Prix Recherche at Belgium’s Prix de l’Économie Sociale; the research was later published as Ecological Economics (Elsevier, 2015). He curates this directory to the same standard, cross-checking every project against established certification bodies and directories — including B Corp, 1% for the Planet, and Solar Impulse Foundation — alongside direct research into each project’s own record.
