What is New Leaf Dynamic Technologies?
New Leaf Dynamic Technologies is shaking up the refrigeration scene in India with its eco-friendly, carbon-neutral solutions. At the heart of their innovation is GreenCHILL™, a biomass-powered refrigeration technology that combines adsorption-based cooling to deliver clean, energy-efficient refrigeration. Their largest cold storage footprints are in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Maharashtra, but their vision stretches far beyond. This isn’t just about keeping things cool—it’s about revolutionising the entire cooling industry across India and beyond, making it greener and more sustainable.
Main Benefits of New Leaf’s GreenCHILL™ Technology
Here’s a quick snapshot of the impact New Leaf has made so far:
- 21,000 MW-hr of energy saved
- 12,150 tons of CO2e carbon mitigated
- 750+ livelihoods generated, with 60% women beneficiaries
- 2X-3X income increase for over 50,000 farmers, including 20% women
- 100+ cold rooms secured bank financing
- 5,500 tons of waste diverted from open burning
These numbers, achieved by the end of Q2-2024, highlight the real-world difference GreenCHILL™ is making—not just environmentally, but socially and economically too.
Innovative Technology Behind GreenCHILL™
GreenCHILL™ is no ordinary refrigeration unit. It’s powered by biomass and uses adsorption-based refrigeration—a patented technology that’s both clean and cost-effective. This means it runs on renewable energy, drastically cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. The GreenCHILL™ 400 Series, for example, can retrofit cold rooms storing up to 20 MT of fruits and vegetables, using just 50 to 100 kgs of biomass in loose or pelletized form. This can reduce cooling costs by up to 80% and power consumption by 95%. Plus, by using natural refrigerants and clean energy, it cuts carbon emissions by about 40 tons annually. Pretty impressive, right?
Founding Story and Vision
The story behind New Leaf is as inspiring as its technology. It all started when Anurag and Akash Agarwal, a father-son duo, saw firsthand the struggles of dairy farmers in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, who were losing produce after harvest due to lack of proper refrigeration. In 2012, they launched GreenCHILL™ to provide a sustainable, homegrown solution. Anurag, an IIT Kanpur alumnus with four decades of industry experience, led the charge to develop this revolutionary refrigeration technology. Their vision? To empower industries and communities with reliable, carbon-neutral, and cost-effective refrigeration solutions that don’t strain India’s power grid.
Expanding Reach and Milestones
Since its inception, New Leaf has hit some major milestones. After five years of R&D, GreenCHILL™ was piloted in 2017. By 2021, 50 units of the GC 400 series were installed at farm gates, along with nine cold rooms at TATA Bigbasket. Fast forward to 2023, and they launched the GC 2000 series with 125+ installations, expanded to Thailand and Kenya, and started offering value-added services like end-user financing and digital supply chain platforms. In 2024, the growth continued with over 160 GC 400 installations, a 20,000 L biomass chiller at Ananda Dairy, and even ripening 20 MT of avocados daily in Kenya. Plus, they secured a patent and expanded into Bangladesh. Talk about scaling up!
