Ting: A Community-Driven Initiative for Project Funding

What Is the Ting Project All About?

Ting is a community-driven initiative where members pool their monthly contributions into a shared account. This money isn’t just sitting there—it’s actively redistributed to support projects proposed by members themselves. But here’s the catch: if you want to receive Ting funds for your project, it has to pass a review by fellow members. They evaluate each submission based on three key criteria, and then decide whether to accept or reject it. And the cool part? Anyone can jump in and help with the decision-making process. It’s all about trust, transparency, and participation.

The Main Benefit of Ting

At its core, Ting offers a fresh way to fund meaningful projects through collective effort. Here are some key facts that make Ting stand out:

  • Monthly contributions from members go into a community account.
  • Funds are redistributed transparently and democratically.
  • Members submit project ideas and get evaluated by peers.
  • Accepted projects receive Ting money to bring ideas to life.
  • Rejected projects can still be realized using one’s own contributions.
  • Payments happen on the 7th of each month (business day).
  • Maximum payout depends on membership duration, starting at CHF 2,000/month in year one.

How Projects Get Evaluated

Submitting a project isn’t just about sending in an idea and hoping for the best. There are clear conditions to meet: you need to have been a member for at least six months, completed the “Starter Toolbox,” and your project must align with at least one UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Once submitted, the project is anonymized and reviewed by volunteers who score it, leave comments, and flag any unclear parts. To get the green light, a project must earn at least two-thirds of the total points, and no more than half of the criteria can be marked as unclear. If it doesn’t make the cut, no worries—you can tweak and resubmit or use your own contributions to move forward.

Membership Types and Contributions

Ting offers three membership levels, each designed to fit different levels of involvement and support:

  • Enable: For those who want to invest trustfully in others without expecting anything back. Contributions start at CHF 10 monthly, with no upper limit and no cancellation period.
  • Boost: Members can receive Ting money for up to three months if needed. Contributions start at CHF 75 monthly, with a three-month cancellation period.
  • Transform: The most involved level, allowing members to receive Ting money for up to six months. Contributions start at CHF 150 monthly, also with a three-month cancellation period.

How Payments Work

Payments are straightforward but come with some rules to keep things fair and smooth. Approved projects are paid out in the order they’re accepted, but only if the member’s profile is complete and there are no outstanding payments. Transfers happen monthly on the 7th (or the next business day). There’s a cap on how long you can receive Ting money—up to six months maximum. Plus, the amount you can get depends on how long you’ve been a member, gradually increasing from CHF 2,000/month in the first year to CHF 2,500/month from the third year onward.

The Impact of Ting on Society

  • Quality Education (SDG 4)
  • Gender Equality (SDG 5)
  • Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6)
  • Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7)
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)
  • Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)
  • Climate Action (SDG 13)
  • Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)

Important Notes to Keep in Mind

Ting isn’t designed to be a quick fix for emergencies or financial crises. It’s built on trust and long-term commitment. According to the General Terms and Conditions, it’s considered abusive to cancel membership immediately after receiving Ting money. Also, if contributions are missed, they will be reclaimed. So, it’s really about investing in the potential of others and fostering a community where everyone’s efforts count.
