How Does AQS Monitoring Work?

The magic lies in the sensors. AQS fixed sensors are installed along pipelines, typically on fire hydrants and valves. Each night, they record a 16 to 20-second audio sample and send this data to a cloud server. There, the system analyzes the sounds and performs correlation between every pair of sensors. If the same noise is detected at the same location, an alert is triggered pinpointing the exact leak spot. This daily routine means leaks can be caught early—before they escalate into major problems.

Sensor Technology and Installation

The type of sensor used depends on the pipe material, diameter, and installation point. For distribution lines, continuous monitoring is done using either accelerometers (which detect vibrations) or hydrophone sensors. Accelerometers are great for metal or asbestos cement (AC) pipes up to 24 inches, while hydrophones are suited for PVC and PE pipes. For transmission or trunk main lines, hydrophone sensors are tapped directly into the pipe.
