Aéronde: Innovative Electric Airship for Sustainable Aerial Work

What is Aéronde?

Aéronde is not your typical aircraft. It’s an innovative, electrically powered airship that offers a fresh take on flying. Powered 100% by electricity and buoyed by helium, this unique craft features vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) capabilities. It can safely carry up to two people plus cargo, flying silently and using very little energy for several hours. Imagine soaring through the sky without noise, wind, or pollution—Aéronde makes that possible with its toroidal (donut-shaped) design and three powerful electric thrusters that allow it to move smoothly in all directions.

Main Benefits of Aéronde

Here’s a quick snapshot of what makes Aéronde stand out:

  • Contains 400 m³ of helium, providing a lift of just over 400 kg
  • Measures 15 meters in diameter
  • Three propellers enable 360-degree movement with minimal energy use
  • Nacelle accommodates 2 people and equipment, serving as the cockpit
  • Envelope made of helium-tight, tear-resistant special fabric, assembled by stitching, welding, and gluing
  • Can lift up to 200 kg at equilibrium without consuming energy (1 m³ helium lifts 1 kg)
  • Designed for stable, high-altitude missions rather than speed
  • Homologated since June 2024 under French ULM class 5 regulations
  • Innovative design protected by patent

Applications and Missions

Aéronde isn’t just a cool flying machine—it’s built to serve a wide range of practical uses. Whether it’s tourism and leisure, inspection and intervention tasks like checking linear structures or rooftops, agriculture surveillance and operations, communication and event support such as telecom relays, or security missions including mine detection and disaster intervention, Aéronde is up for the challenge. Its ability to hover steadily and move precisely makes it ideal for aerial work that demands both stability and sustainability.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability

One of the most impressive things about Aéronde is how eco-friendly it is. Thanks to its helium lift and electric propulsion, it uses very little energy even when hovering for hours. Unlike traditional aircraft that rely on fossil fuels and generate noise and pollution, Aéronde flies quietly and cleanly. This makes it a responsible choice for aerial operations, reducing environmental impact while still delivering reliable performance. It’s a glimpse into the future of sustainable aviation.

Regulatory Approval and Commercial Operations

Aéronde isn’t just a concept—it’s real and flying! In June 2024, the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) granted certification for its production and operation under ultralight aviation class 5 regulations. Commercial operations kicked off in September 2024, with Aéronde performing its first electric line inspections and offering exciting leisure flights. It even made its debut at the Coupe Icare 2024 air show, showcasing its capabilities to the public and industry alike.

Project Impact on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – thanks to its electric propulsion and low energy consumption
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – through its patented, innovative design
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – by supporting safer, quieter aerial inspections and interventions
  • SDG 13: Climate Action – reducing pollution and carbon footprint compared to traditional aircraft
  • SDG 15: Life on Land – aiding in environmental monitoring and disaster response

Looking Ahead: The Future of Aerial Work

Aéronde represents a new generation of aerial vehicles that prioritize sustainability, efficiency, and versatility. Its unique design and operational capabilities open doors to countless possibilities in aerial work, from agriculture to security and beyond. As it continues to evolve and expand its commercial presence, Aéronde is set to change how people think about flying—making it quieter, cleaner, and more accessible for a variety of missions. The sky’s the limit, really.
