Spottswoode Estate: A Legacy in Wine and Sustainability
Spottswoode is a family wine estate with roots stretching back to 1882, instantly recognizable by the pre-Prohibition Victorian home featured on its wine label. The estate was named by Mrs. Albert Spotts in 1910 and later came under the care of Mary and Jack Novak in 1972. A century after its founding, Mary Novak released Spottswoode’s first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, marking a milestone in the estate’s rich history.

The Roots of Spottswoode Estate
The story begins with George Schonewald, a German immigrant who arrived in Napa Valley around 1870. He quickly made a name for himself in the hotel business, managing some of northern California’s finest hotels, including the Del Monte in Monterey. In 1882, George and his wife Catherine bought 31 acres at the foot of the Mayacamas mountain range in St. Helena, intending it as a summer retreat. They planted 17 acres of wine grapes and named the property “Esmeralda.”
The Novak Family’s Vision and Growth
Fast forward to 1972, when Dr. Jack and Mary Novak purchased the estate and moved their family of five children to St. Helena. Inspired by the climate and soil, they expanded the vineyard by acquiring an additional 15 acres, bringing the total to 46 acres. Mary Novak’s passion led to the founding of Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery, and the release of its first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. She brought on Tony Soter as winemaker, and the first vintage was carefully cellared in the cool basement beneath the estate home.
Commitment to Organic and Biodynamic Farming
Spottswoode’s commitment to organic farming began early, with practices in place since 1985 and formal certification in 1992. The estate didn’t stop there — biodynamic farming was introduced in 2008, further supporting the vineyard as a living, breathing ecosystem. This approach reflects a deep respect for the land and a dedication to regenerative agriculture, ensuring the vineyard thrives for generations to come.
