Alkion BioInnovations: Transforming Bioproduction with Plant Tissue Technology

What is Alkion BioInnovations?

Alkion BioInnovations is a cutting-edge biotech company dedicated to revolutionizing pharmaceutical bioproduction. The company is pioneering the next-gen active ingredient bioproduction platform that develops and produces critical vaccines and treatments via plant tissue technologies. Born as a spin-off from Imperial College London and established in 2017, the project is all about transforming non-GMO plants into natural biorefineries through a process of biostimulation of plant genes in bioreactors. This innovative approach boosts molecule production up to 800 times compared to traditional greenhouse culture… the core ambition is to build the world’s most sustainable and efficient industrial bioproduction platform for high-value active ingredients in both pharmaceutical and agri-food sectors.

Key Benefits and Performance Metrics

This project stands out with impressive performance figures that underscore its efficiency, sustainability, and affordability. The detailed benefits include:

  • 95% Carbon footprint reduction
  • 98% Water reduction
  • 95% Space reduction
  • 85% Variability reduction
  • 0 Pesticide use
  • 95% Automation
  • 75% to 99% Production cost reduction

Innovative Technology: Plant Tissue Revolution

The heart of the project is an advanced plant tissue biostimulation technology that is truly a plant tissue revolution. The method employs specially designed bioreactors—from 1L lab reactors to the 300L “Alkaburst 2.0”—to achieve production of high-value active compounds on a scale that significantly saves space, time, water, and energy. This is done by stimulating plant genes to produce desired molecules in specific organs, and the obtained yields elevate efficiency to as much as 800x improvement compared to conventional practices. The platform is flexible and supports various projects including medical cannabinoids (with an exclusive R&D license on Cannabis for medical purposes), potent natural vaccine adjuvants, recombinant proteins like Interferon Beta 1A, and even intense natural sweeteners.

Sustainability and Environmental Commitments

Sustainability stands as a pillar of the entire project. Through a carbon-neutral approach, the method incorporates a closed-circuit technology that not only saves energy, water, and space but also recycles a whopping 95% of waste. Environmental concerns are at the forefront as the technology guarantees the use of pure biomass without pesticides or adulterants, ensuring that the extractions and purifications are cleaner and greener. The micropropagation process and tightly controlled culture conditions ensure a consistency with less than 5% variability batch-to-batch, maintaining uncompromised quality and safety for patients and consumers.

Groundbreaking Achievements and History

The innovative journey began in 2011 with the founding of Alkion BioPharma to revolutionize secondary metabolism production for cancer therapies, and later in 2017, Alkion BioInnovations was born to focus on disruptive pharmaceutical and agri-food solutions. With a strong heritage supported by Imperial Innovations—a team composed of Imperial College researchers and business professionals—the project has achieved important milestones. Patent-protected technologies and exclusive licenses form the backbone of their breakthrough process, while numerous grants and awards, including the prestigious €5M EIC Accelerator win and selection as a finalist of the Zayed Sustainability Prize in the Health category during COP28, testify to the project’s promise and global impact.

Technical Excellence and Research Ecosystem

Innovation is not only about the technology deployed but also about the environment where research is nurtured. The laboratories of Alkion BioInnovations are located within the renowned INRAE research center in Versailles, France, a hub that provides the ideal atmosphere for groundbreaking research and development. This alignment with high-caliber research institutions ensures that the technology continuously evolves, further driving advances in both medicinal and agricultural applications. The deep integration of plant science expertise together with modern bioreactor technology is a proof of the project’s commitment to excellence and constant improvement.

Project Impact on Global SDGs

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Facilitating access to potent molecules for vaccine development and treatments.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Advancing bio-industrial production and high-efficiency bioreactors.
