The story behind this initiative is one full of inspiration and evolution. It all began in 2010 when Paul Brown came home from college feeling inspired after reading a bunch of Joel Salatin’s books. He wondered why the family ranch, with its rich history, should focus solely on beef, especially when there was so much potential to supply the local community with a variety of animal-based foods. With great enthusiasm, Paul took a leap and started raising chickens, beginning with 75 Leghorn laying hens, building a chicken trailer, and even selling eggs out of the back of a pickup truck. In 2013, the addition of sheep, followed by pigs in 2014, marked a significant moment where the customer base and product diversity grew steadily. The ongoing family narrative extends back to 1953 when Paul’s grandparents and great uncles bought the land together. In 1981, Gabe Brown and Shelly moved back, bought the property, and started the ranch, laying down a foundation that would embrace no-till practices in 1993 and eventually evolve into a dynamic, digital-first operation in 2017.
