What the Project Is
Founded in 1998, Cafe Campesino Roastery stands as Georgia’s first and only 100% fair trade, organic specialty coffee company. Located in Americus, Georgia – the birthplace of Koinonia Partners and Habitat for Humanity International, and just about 9 miles east of Plains (home to former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn) – this cooperative importer, roaster, wholesaler-distributor, and online retailer has built a reputation for its authentic, farmer-focused coffee. The project centers on sourcing and roasting some of the best small-batch, shade-grown, specialty-grade arabica coffee available in the country, all while staying true to principles of transparency, sustainability, and ethical trade… It’s more than just great coffee; it’s a movement built on community, care, and commitment.

Unique Sourcing Approach
The way Cafe Campesino Roastery buys coffee truly sets it apart. All the coffee is imported directly from small landholder farmer cooperatives via Cooperative Coffees – a unique, principle-driven supply chain co-founded by the company in 1998. This approach relies on common-sense and respectful, mutually beneficial terms of trade, ensuring the sourcing of organic green coffee in a manner that is fair, direct, and transparent. When this coffee is roasted with care in Georgia, it produces an exceptional cup that speaks volumes about the journey from crop to cup… It’s a sourcing method that’s as genuine as it is effective.
Commitment to Community
At its core, Cafe Campesino believes that coffee should build community. Every stage – from its origins in small-scale farming communities to the meticulous roasting process – reflects a desire to enrich lives and support global trade systems that benefit local farmers. The involvement in Cooperative Coffees not only creates long-term partnerships with farming communities but also fortifies an ethical network focused on respect and equity. The story behind the project even includes a memorable incident where a wheelbarrow of dirt unexpectedly spurred the idea that would eventually evolve into both Cooperative Coffees and Cafe Campesino… A testament to the sparks that often ignite great community-driven missions.
Sustainable Mission and Values
Ethics and sustainability remain the heart of Cafe Campesino Roastery. Since its inception in 1998, the project has been grounded in values that prioritize people, the planet, and quality coffee. In January 2017, achieving Certified B Corporation status cemented this commitment, reinforcing the belief that business can indeed be a force for positive social and environmental change. Operating as a member of the Fair Trade Federation, the Specialty Coffee Association, and Georgia Organics, the company delivers on promises to uphold sustainability from the very start of every coffee bean’s journey. Occasionally, the dedication feels almost palpable – a steady reminder that every cup contributes to a broader positive impact.
Farmer-Focused Practices
The project is deeply rooted in practices that champion the rights and welfare of small-holding coffee farmers. By sourcing via Cooperative Coffees, Cafe Campesino ensures that the farmers receive fair compensation and work under ethical terms, resulting in a fair trade coffee that makes a noticeable difference. This farmer-focused approach is not merely transactional; it signifies the cultivation of equitable and sustainable global trade communities. When a coffee enthusiast enjoys a cup of Cafe Campesino, they are not only savoring a rich, organic brew, but also supporting farmers who nurture their crops with honesty and care – a real win-win for both the environment and the people behind every harvest.
