What is Going Green Solutions?

Going Green Solutions is a passionate team dedicated to sustainability, reducing carbon emissions and waste, and helping Melbourne householders live more comfortably – all without breaking the bank on energy bills. Originally established as a supplier of ‘all things green’, this project built its reputation on sourcing and verifying genuinely sustainable products. Over 15 years of operation as a retail shop in Hurstbridge laid the foundation for integrity and service, and soon after, one of the founders, Lucinda Flynn, shifted the focus to home energy efficiency assessments and advice. In late 2022, the shopfront closed to fully dedicate efforts to energy efficiency and to continue providing Biopak products to food and beverage traders. It’s a journey that feels very natural… almost like evolution in motion.

Main Benefits of Going Green Solutions

Key figures and facts about this initiative speak volumes about its effectiveness and commitment:

  • 100% electric business using Diamond Energy – a provider that scored 5 stars as per the Green Electricity Guide.
  • Continuous monitoring and reduction of energy use through efficient lighting, laptops (instead of desktops), heat pump hot water systems, reverse cycle units, and solar PV installations.
  • Commitment to using 100% Green Power and actively recording and offsetting carbon emissions.
  • Robust recycling practices including the use of 100% post-consumer recycled fibre paper, double-sided printing, and re-use of single side printed paper.
  • Staff volunteering: 16 hours of volunteer work per year after one year of employment, plus one free remote home energy efficiency advice session per month for someone in need.
  • 1% annual profit committed to charity, with current support directed to Oz Harvest.
  • Assistance offered to Aussie businesses to reduce environmental impact by switching to biodegradable food service and catering products.

Sustainability in Action

Energy, water, and waste management are core to this project. The business operates on an all-electric model, with every decision reflecting sustainable practices. The electricity supplier, Diamond Energy, uses only renewable assets and is firmly against fossil fuel power stations. Even though the electricity is already Carbon Neutral, the decision to purchase 100% Green Power further emphasizes the commitment to a cleaner, greener future. Minimal energy use combined with energy-efficient devices like laptops and LED lighting ensures that every action contributes to reducing the overall environmental footprint… every watt counts!

Local Community Impact

The initiative holds community vitality in high regard. All staff are local residents, reinforcing strong community bonds and bolstering the local economy. By prioritising local and small businesses, as well as buying Australian made products whenever possible, Going Green Solutions actively supports the community’s economic sustainability. The choice of banking with Bank Australia – a member-owned organisation focused on creating mutual prosperity – further aligns with the values of positive economic, social, environmental, and cultural impact. Every little step taken ensures that community development and sustainability go hand in hand.

Environmental Commitment and Energy Efficiency

Commitment to sustainability is woven into the project’s DNA. The business continually monitors energy use, making small, thoughtful tweaks to reduce it even further. Investments in energy-efficient heating, cooling systems, and solar PV mean that energy use remains exceptionally low. Moreover, the team recycles all unnecessary waste – from office paper and hard plastic to refillable printer inkwells. It’s not just about reducing waste; it’s about inspiring a mindset where environmental consciousness is seamlessly integrated into everyday operations… a true win-win for households and the planet.

Project Impact

  • SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Community Engagement and Giving Back

Giving back is an integral part of the project’s ethos. Going Green Solutions has long been actively involved in supporting local community organisations that promote sustainability and eco-friendly living. Beyond business operations, staff engage in volunteer work—16 hours a year dedicated, once eligible—and participate in events like Sustainable House Day and Speed Date a Sustainability Expert. Additionally, the business donates 1% of its annual profit to local organisations that create a positive social and environmental impact. Currently, Oz Harvest is the chosen recipient, a partnership that celebrates waste reduction and the circular economy. Through these actions, the project doesn’t merely talk about sustainability – it lives it, creating ripples of positive change throughout Melbourne and beyond.
