What the Project Is
Sanivation is a sanitation partner for African secondary cities – a unique initiative supporting local governments to tackle a city’s waste management puzzle. The project tackles two major development challenges – access to sustainable energy and safely managed sanitation. By partnering with local governments and water utilities, the initiative ensures that waste is safely managed, turning potential crisis into opportunity. In many instances, this means setting up feces-to-fuel factories that intake fecal sludge and other biomass residues to produce a sustainable fuel. The sale of this fuel covers the operational costs of the factory, enabling continual processing of waste and the perpetual production of fuel… It is an approach that looks at sanitation not as just a service but as a dynamic system where safe, dignified sanitation is brought to life for everyone, every day.

Hands-On Local Impact

The collaborative effort extends to water utilities who are empowered to increase funding allocation and improve safely managed sanitation. This hands-on approach not only cleans up cities but also creates opportunities for local growth, job creation, and improved public health. Through practical interventions and evidence-based strategies, the initiative builds resilient communities where sustainable sanitation is a given rather than an aspiration.
An Integrated Model for Sustainable Cities
At its core, Sanivation’s work is about more than just waste management – it is a catalyst for urban transformation. By rethinking the waste management puzzle, the project brings clean energy solutions and job creation into the picture. The process of converting fecal sludge and biomass into sustainable fuel marks a significant pivot from conventional approaches. Instead of seeing waste as a problem, it is reframed as an opportunity, creating a loop of benefits that fuel urban development and environmental sustainability. The blend of public-private partnerships and innovative financial models ensures that everything is geared towards building a cleaner, healthier, and more productive city. It is a model that recognizes the local context and adapts to it, ensuring that every innovation is practical and sustainable.
