LA MANIVELLE, WHAT IS IT?
It is the largest object library in Switzerland! This non-profit cooperative offers the opportunity to borrow over 4,000 objects of all kinds, and the idea is simple: why purchase an item that will only be used twice a year? There is access to a huge catalog that includes a wide range of tools, party supplies, kitchen items, gardening equipment, multimedia, sports gear, cleaning supplies, camping gear, and much more. It’s practical, economic, and ecological… a real game-changer for those seeking smarter consumption and reduced clutter at home.
Main Benefits
Key figures and facts that make the service unbeatable include:
- Over 4,000 unique objects available to borrow
- Choice between an unlimited borrowing pass (monthly or yearly) or borrowing by item
- Five branches located in Charmilles (within La MACO), Lancy, Meyrin, Pâquis, and Thônex
- Systematic checks performed after each loan ensuring items are always in good condition
- 80% of objects come from generous donations
The Diverse Range of Objects
The catalog is vast and incredibly diverse – making it easy to find unusual and unexpected items. Searching through the many categories, borrowers might discover sporty gear, travel essentials, multimedia equipment, cleaning tools, DIY and renovation supplies, a variety of kitchen gadgets, party accessories, transport devices, electrical items, and gardening equipment. For specific needs, the borrowers are encouraged to speak up particularly if the item desired is not found – it’s a friendly reminder that this collection evolves and grows based on the community’s needs.
The Simple Borrowing Process
The borrowing process is designed to be as easy and straightforward as possible. First, an account can be created online within two minutes or directly at one of the branches. Once registered, objects from the catalog can be reserved at least two days in advance. It is important to note that reservations are done on a first-come, first-served basis, and the items are shared among all users. When it comes time to pick up the reserved objects, several options are available: picking up directly at a branch (which includes expert advice and access to consumables), collecting from a relay point provided by partners, or even home delivery – though the latter is a paid service (with special arrangements available for residents in Onex).
Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Every object is systematically checked after each loan to ensure that it remains in optimal condition. Borrowers are kindly asked to return the objects clean and to report any issues they observe. Thanks to the dedicated repairman, Yannick, these objects are used for as long as possible before reaching the end of their life. This is not just about convenience; it is about a mindful shift towards sustainability, reflecting a commitment to responsible consumption and the thoughtful use of shared resources.

How to Participate
Participation in this innovative project is highly accessible and engaging. Once an account is created online or in one of the branches, choosing the suitable pass becomes the next step. Borrowers can choose between a one-month or a one-year unlimited borrowing pass, which is available for payment online via credit card or at the branch through cash, credit card, or TWINT. Residents in some municipalities might even have the pass offered to them. Alternatively, if a user prefers to pay per object, the “borrowing by item” option is available, where each object bears its own value.
After the pass is arranged, the borrowing process truly begins – reserve what is needed via the online catalog, pick up the objects at the chosen branch or relay point, and then enjoy using them for projects like setting up a caravan, hosting a family raclette dinner, renovating a garden, or throwing a memorable party. Borrowers are even encouraged to share photos of their projects to celebrate success and creativity. Loans last one week by default, and if the object hasn’t been reserved by another user, an extension can be easily requested through the online account or via phone. Be mindful, though – if the extension isn’t arranged before the loan’s end date, a modest late fee of 1.- per object per day will apply to keep everything running smoothly.
