A new, flexible seawater desalination system that is powered by waves and can be used in developing countries.
UNDP says that more than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water right now, and that number will grow dramatically in the next 20 years if clean water supplies don’t increase by about 50% and access isn’t made more fair. Resolute Marine made Wave2OTM to deal with this problem. Wave2OTM technology is a unique way to remove salt from seawater. It combines Resolute Marine’s wave energy converters with desalination and power plants on land. This solution was made to be easy to use and maintain, but it also has a number of new and patented technologies built into it. Resolute Marine’s goal is to make it much easier for people living along the coast and businesses and farms in developing countries and small island developing states (SIDS) to get water and to replace the diesel-electric desalination systems that are used all over the world. In a series of tests, the key technologies that make Wave2OTM work have been shown to be reliable and cost-effective for making clean water in many places and for many uses around the world.
Positive facts about Wave2O™
Employs several wave energy converters (WECs) that pressurize seawater which is piped ashore to directly drive a seawater reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination system
Wave2O™ requires no other sources of energy other than ocean waves
Due to the low permeate recovery ratio and the relatively small size of Wave2O™ plants, the post-production brine is diluted to a point where it presents no harm to the environment
Wave2O™ is powered by an abundant, inexhaustible, consistent and clean renewable energy resource and has been designed so that post-process brine can be discharged directly into the sea without harm
Each 4,000 m3/day Wave2O™ plant that replaces an equivalent-size diesel-powered plant will cut CO2 emission by 5,500 tons per year which corresponds to taking 1,050 cars off the road
The operation and maintenance of Wave2O™ systems and the production of wave energy converters will require skilled local labor and suppliers and will create many local jobs
A 4,000 m3/day Wave2OTM plant can produce water at €1.20/m3 which is less than the €3.60/m3 minimum of diesel-electric desalination systems and 3.7x lower than the average cost of water in Cabo Verde
