A cement that saves resources and is made of mixed granules from demolition rubble that have been processed.
Susteno is the first cement in Switzerland that saves resources and is made from high-quality mixed rubble from demolition projects. In Switzerland, 85% of demolition waste is recycled, and Holcim found a way to close the material cycle for the 15% that would have been thrown away otherwise. This saves valuable landfill space (about 1,200 truck loads in 2020), protects raw materials, and cuts CO2 by 10% compared to a CO2-optimized Swiss mass cement and 30% compared to a type I cement. In 2020, the amount of CO2 that was saved was the same as if 4,700 people flew from Zurich to New York. Susteno is also a solution for companies that recycle concrete and mixed demolition waste and want to find an environmentally friendly way to get rid of the fine pieces that can’t be used. Susteno is the next generation of mass cements. It is better for the environment and meets all the rules. This solution shows how the building industry can be a key part of the move to a circular economy.
