Two methods are used to make oils, especially edible oils: cold pressing for high-quality virgin oils and/or solvent extraction for mass-produced oils like sunflower or rapeseed oils. At the moment, the best way to do the solvent extraction step is with a petrochemical solvent called hexane. Hexane is dangerous and poisonous for people who are exposed to it, like workers, but it is also dangerous and poisonous for consumers, since traces of it are still found in the final products that go into the food supply chain. The solution, EcoXtract, is a safe, non-toxic biobased solvent for extraction made from waste products from agriculture. This solvent is good for the environment, the people who use it, and the people who buy it. It is biodegradable and reduces the carbon footprint of processes where it is used.
