SuBeHuDe: Promoting Sustainable Beekeeping and Human Development

What is the SuBeHuDe Project?

SuBeHuDe, short for Sustainable Beekeeping and Human Development, is a grassroots non-governmental, non-profit-sharing, and non-partisan organization. It was established by a group of young sustainable human development practitioners and officially registered on November 20th, 2015, under Tanzania NGO Act No. 24 of 2002 with registration number 00NGO/08296. The project’s core mission revolves around promoting sustainable beekeeping practices alongside human development, focusing on the three dimensions of sustainability — Social, Economic, and Environmental Development, often referred to as SEED.

Main Benefits of SuBeHuDe

SuBeHuDe’s work has created significant positive impacts in the communities it serves. Some key figures and facts include:

  • Over 100,000 greener jobs and decent work opportunities created for youth and women, fostering self-employment.
  • More than 20,000 local community members trained in sustainable beekeeping and the beekeeping value chain.
  • Empowerment and capacity building for over 3,000 vulnerable and marginalized community members.

Focus on Sustainable Beekeeping and Value Chain Development

At the heart of SuBeHuDe’s efforts is sustainable beekeeping and the development of its value chain. The project trains individuals in sustainable beekeeping techniques and technology, ensuring that practices are environmentally friendly and economically viable. This approach not only supports biodiversity conservation but also helps communities generate income through beekeeping-related enterprises. It’s about more than just honey — it’s about creating a sustainable livelihood that respects nature.

Commitment to Regenerative Agriculture and Ecosystem Restoration

SuBeHuDe also champions regenerative agriculture and the restoration of landscapes and ecosystems. By promoting practical permaculture and natural resource management, the project helps restore degraded environments, ensuring that the land remains fertile and productive for future generations. This work is crucial in combating environmental degradation and supporting biodiversity, which in turn supports sustainable livelihoods.

Empowering Communities Through Education and Healthcare

Access to inclusive quality education and basic healthcare is another cornerstone of SuBeHuDe’s work. The project implements programs that improve education opportunities and healthcare services, including WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives. These efforts build community capacity and empower individuals with the tools they need to break free from the cycle of poverty. It’s a holistic approach — addressing social needs alongside economic and environmental goals.

SuBeHuDe’s Impact on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • SDG 1: No Poverty — by creating jobs and empowering marginalized groups.
  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger — through sustainable agriculture and beekeeping.
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being — via basic healthcare and WASH programs.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education — promoting inclusive and accessible education.
