What is Papkot®?
Papkot® introduces a ceramic coating that gives paper the same packaging performances as plastic—without using any plastic at all. With oceans overrun by plastic, Papkot’s paper coatings offer a truly revolutionary approach to preserve the environment and protect our planet. The project is all about eradicating plastic from packaging and everyday life, ensuring both human and planet safety first.
Main Benefits
- 99.99% recyclable – Papkot coated papers meet the most advanced European standards, so there are no coarse rejects, flakes, or stickies.
- Fully biodegradable – Paper’s natural composition of cellulose means it can be composted in your backyard.
- Fluorine free – Paper products free from forever chemicals with exceptional resistance to grease, oil, and glycerol.
- Plastic free – No plastic present. Instead, the innovative ceramic materials deliver performance without any deception.
Innovative Packaging Performance
Papkot’s coating is a game-changer. It offers a water barrier that makes paper water resistant to various degrees—from rain to immersion for months and even years, while the surface remains unchanged to eye and touch. The coating further ensures an oil and grease barrier engineered to withstand exposure to vegetable oil, animal fats, margarine, and even glycerol. There is also an upcoming moisture and oxygen barrier improvement scheduled for 2025, promising at least a 50% better moisture resistance compared to traditional uncoated paper…
Tailor-Made Solutions & Papkot OS
Designed to provide a Lego-like chemistry where different building blocks can be added for each feature, Papkot’s approach is innovative and flexible. The patented Papkot OS works like an operating system—similar in concept to a smartphone with an app for any need. It not only eliminates plastic from packaging forever but also removes toxic chemicals such as varnishes, release liners, SBR, and fluorinated compounds. The only limit is creativity.
Versatile Application
Papkot coatings work effectively on almost any paper, be it from virgin or recycled fibers. The technology can be applied before printing or after printing, on the web or the sheets. Whether used by high-end packaging manufacturers like Mondi or Tetrapak, or in co-developed solutions with eating giants such as Nestlé and Unilever, the coating adapts to the application requirements seamlessly.
Project Impact
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Reducing the ecological footprint of packaging.
- SDG 13: Climate Action – by eliminating plastic and toxic chemicals from the supply chain.
- SDG 14: Life Below Water – tackling the issue of plastic overload in oceans.
- SDG 15: Life on Land – supporting the use of biodegradable materials that do not harm natural ecosystems.
Building a Sustainable Future
Paper coating to replace single-use plastic in packaging—Papkot delivers a coating for paper that gives paper the same packaging performances as plastic, without plastic. So, the vision of a world free of plastic packaging is finally within reach… The project directly targets paper and packaging manufacturers by co-developing packaging solutions with their end-users, who are the major consumer packaged goods companies. This approach is not only innovative but also essential for building a sustainable future by replacing toxic chemicals and revolutionizing traditional packaging methods.
