What is the LOXO Digital Driver™ Project?
LOXO Digital Driver™ software is revolutionizing commercial vehicles by empowering them with autonomy. It’s Europe’s first Level 4 autonomous driving technology that actually operates on public roads. Designed to boost business growth, increase safety, and promote sustainability in city centers, LOXO’s technology is a game-changer. The Digital Driver™ enables commercial vehicles to self-drive, and here’s the kicker—it’s completely vehicle-agnostic. That means the software supports advanced Level 4 driverless missions across a wide range of vehicles, ensuring seamless and reliable operation wherever it’s deployed.
Main Benefits of LOXO Digital Driver™
Here’s what makes LOXO stand out:
- Europe’s first Level 4 autonomous driving tech on public roads
- Vehicle-agnostic software supporting advanced driverless missions
- Combines advanced AI with an autonomous sensor stack for full autonomy
- Virtual mapping approach boosts scalability and cost-effectiveness
- Plug-and-play solutions for B2B delivery and municipal service vehicles
- Triple redundancy safety system with 360° object, people, and animal detection
- Double redundancy in software architecture for maximum reliability
- Options to subscribe to software only or get fully integrated vehicles
How LOXO’s Technology Works
At the core of every autonomous operation is the LOXO Digital Driver™ (LDD). It combines cutting-edge AI with a sophisticated sensor stack—think solid-state LiDAR, Radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors—all working together to enable vehicles to drive autonomously on public roads. The virtual mapping approach is a clever twist that makes scaling operations faster and more cost-effective. Plus, the software stack is designed with safety in mind, featuring triple redundancy and powerful algorithms that detect everything around the vehicle in a full 360° view. It’s like having an F1 driver and a co-pilot onboard at all times.
LOXO’s Vehicle Lineup: Alpha and R1
LOXO offers two main vehicle models fully integrated with the Digital Driver™. The LOXO Alpha is purpose-built for driverless last-mile delivery—compact, electric, and perfect for city logistics. It’s designed for B2B2C last-mile delivery, with customizable compartments that fit deliveries of all sizes. Customers can open their specific compartment using a code and even interact with a remote controller for questions. On the other hand, the LOXO R1 is a retrofitted delivery van tailored for middle-mile delivery applications. Together, these vehicles cover a wide range of delivery needs, making autonomous logistics a reality.
From Concept to Commercialization
LOXO’s journey started with R&D on the Digital Driver™ software between 2018 and 2020. In 2021, LOXO AG was incorporated, marking the beginning of the Alpha prototype development. By 2022, the LOXO Alpha was unveiled in Bern, Switzerland, and received Swiss road authorization. The following year, 2023, saw the first Swiss autonomous commercial application on public roads with partners Migros and Schindler, and the fleet began to grow. Now, in 2024, the LOXO Digital Driver™ is set for full commercialization, ready to transform how commercial vehicles operate on public roads.
LOXO’s Impact on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – advancing autonomous vehicle technology
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – promoting safer, cleaner urban transport
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – optimizing delivery logistics
- SDG 13: Climate Action – supporting electric vehicles and reducing emissions
- SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – enabling new business growth through automation
Why LOXO is a Game-Changer for Autonomous Commercial Vehicles
LOXO isn’t just about technology; it’s about elevating the entire driving mission for customers. Previously, fleets relied on physical drivers, but now, with the LOXO Digital Driver™, automation becomes accessible. Customers can choose to subscribe to the software alone or opt for fully integrated vehicles. The plug-and-play nature of the solution ensures smooth integration into existing processes. Plus, operating its own fleet allows LOXO to continuously refine and demonstrate the technology’s capabilities. It’s a bold step toward a future where autonomous commercial vehicles are the norm, not the exception.
