What is the Koraï Project?
Koraï represents a fresh wave of climate-positive companies that flipped the script on a traditional family coral farm. Instead of just breeding corals for export, this project has evolved into a nature-based solution powerhouse, laser-focused on regenerating marine ecosystems along Africa’s coasts. Born from a personal story rooted in Madagascar and shaped by experiences in France, Koraï’s mission is clear: to restore marine biodiversity while aligning with the corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals of international businesses. It’s about turning a legacy into a movement that benefits both the environment and communities.
The Main Benefit: Restoring Africa’s Marine Ecosystems
Koraï’s work is crucial because the state of Africa’s marine environments is alarming. Here are some eye-opening facts that highlight why this project matters:
- 50% of coral reefs have disappeared.
- One-third of mangroves are gone.
- African marine ecosystem services are valued at $814 billion.
- 20 million East Africans rely on coral reefs for daily food.
- 12,000 square meters of coral reefs border East African countries.
- By 2030, 42% of the world’s youth will be African.
These numbers aren’t just stats—they’re a call to action. Koraï helps companies engage directly in restoring these vital ecosystems by offering carbon credits and custom CSR plans. Plus, their nurseries don’t just grow corals, mangroves, and seagrasses—they also welcome locals and tourists alike through an edutainment aquarium, making conservation accessible and fun.
The Story Behind Koraï
Jeimila Donty, the founder and CEO, grew up in Madagascar before moving to France at 17. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, she always knew she’d start something impactful. The stark contrast between the economies of Europe and Africa sparked a realization—there was a role she had to play. When her father passed away in 2020, Jeimila and her brothers inherited the family coral farm. Instead of continuing the old ways, she transformed it into Koraï, merging her passion for marine biodiversity with the CSR needs of global companies. It’s a story of turning personal loss into a powerful environmental mission.
The Vision Driving Koraï
Facing the climate emergency and biodiversity loss, Koraï believes everyone must step up—especially businesses. The vision is simple but bold: companies can be catalysts for change by shifting their business models and funding regenerative projects. African countries hold incredible potential in building a new economy centered on sustainability and environmental care. By connecting international businesses with Africa’s coastal economies, Koraï is paving the way for partnerships that protect marine life and create innovative solutions. It’s about building a future where economic growth and environmental health go hand in hand.
The Skilled and Passionate Team
Koraï’s impact wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated team. This French-Malagasy group blends business savvy with technical expertise to ensure every project delivers real environmental benefits. Leading the charge is Jeimila Donty, the visionary founder and CEO. Supporting her are key players like Enki Barache, Head of Operations; Dayda Rakotomahatsiaro, Coral Restoration Manager; and coral keepers Floris Avitsara and Edio Toenjara. Together, they bring passion, knowledge, and hands-on care to every coral, mangrove, and seagrass nursery.

Engaging Communities and Visitors
Koraï’s nurseries aren’t just about restoration—they’re also about education and engagement. Locals and tourists can visit the edutainment aquarium, a unique space where learning meets fun. This approach helps raise awareness about the importance of marine ecosystems and encourages community involvement. By making conservation tangible and interactive, Koraï fosters a deeper connection between people and the ocean, inspiring more to join the mission of protecting Africa’s coastal treasures.
