Cova: Providing Safe Drinking Water Solutions for Central America

What is Cova?

Cova is building a healthier Central America through community-centered safe water solutions. Formerly known as EOS International, the organization began its work in Central America in 2008 and has evolved significantly over the past 16 years. It all started with the goal of improving health, wealth, and the environment in Nicaragua through low-cost technology solutions. Over time, the focus shifted, and from 2016 onward, the organization concentrated on providing rural communities with access to safe drinking water. In April 2024, the name changed from EOS to Cova – a change that captures the essence of the mission in a more memorable, dynamic way. It is the same dedicated team delivering proven impact … but now under a name that reflects the covalent bond of successful partnerships, similar to how hydrogen and oxygen combine to create water.

Main Benefits of the Cova Project

Cova provides access to safe drinking water and makes a tangible difference in everyday life. The comprehensive model, supported by an innovative Circuit Rider Model, ensures that rural communities have continued access to house water solutions that are sustainable and community-centered. The key benefits include:

  • Serving over 1.7 million people
  • Impacting nearly one and a half million customers across more than two thousand communities
  • Operating in Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador
  • Emphasizing community-centered, data-driven approaches
  • Relating to essential SDGs through robust partnerships

The Organization’s Origin and Evolution

For over a decade now, the organization has continuously evolved. Initially, the focus was on improving health and the environment in Nicaragua, but with the strategic decision made in 2016, there was a clear concentration on safe water solutions. The journey began in Central America as EOS International, and over time, the merging of ADEC – another safe water nonprofit – in 2018 created a moment of transformation. The evolution of the organization came naturally as the mission broadened and the audiences diversified. It is fascinating how the growth into Honduras and El Salvador further reinforced the need for a new, more globally resonant brand name. The gradual changes, conceived with thoughtful planning and cross-regional insights, allowed the organization to refine its impact while maintaining its commitment to community care.

The Branding Journey and Mission

Choosing the name Cova was a process that involved a year of creative, strategic brainstorming. It was a careful process that combined voices from teams in Central America and the United States along with input from the board of directors. The decision to create a memorable brand was based on the belief that effective communication with diverse audiences is crucial. With nearly one and a half million customers across four countries and thousands of donors and partners worldwide, the change was both timely and essential. The new name resonates because much like hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water through a covalent bond, Cova thrives on partnerships that lead to comprehensive solutions. This new chapter signals continued commitment to providing safe drinking water and ensuring that community infrastructure remains robust.

Innovative Solutions for Rural Communities

Cova’s approach is marked by innovative and market-based models, particularly the Circuit Rider Model. This model leverages creative approaches and innovative market-based solutions to ensure that safe water remains accessible even in the most rural parts of Central America. The commitment is evident as communities benefit from continuous and reliable access to water – a lifeline for education, health, and productivity. Parents can continue working, children are able to attend school, and communities thrive with renewed hope. The emphasis on partnerships is crucial – the more people involved, the stronger the bond, just like the interdependence of elements to create water.

Community Impact and Long-Term Vision

At its heart, Cova is making a real difference. The transformation from EOS International to Cova is not just about a name change but speaks to the evolution of its mission and strategy. The shift marks a commitment to building a healthier, more self-sufficient Central America. The innovative safe water solutions provided by Cova have helped create healthier communities where data-driven strategies are combined with community input. This integrated approach ensures that every drop of water enhances the quality of life for those who rely on it. In rural communities, the availability of safe water opens up doors to improved health, better education, and increased economic opportunities. The approach is simple yet powerful, and it is designed to adapt and grow in response to the needs of the communities it serves.
