What the Project Is
BlueHeart Energy is a deep tech company developing a revolutionary sustainable technology that aims to radically improve the performance of heat pumps – turning them from the best solution in the market into the perfect solution. The company uses thermo acoustics, a technique that creates sound waves in a closed circuit to generate both heat and cold. This innovative approach, previously tried for industrial purposes, is now being applied for the very first time to power heat pumps in residential buildings. The design of BlueHeart is conceived to replace the core component of conventional heat pumps, making it easily integrable by original equipment manufacturers. In short, the project is all about transforming everyday home climate control with affordable, silent, and flexible heat pump devices that can operate efficiently across wide temperature ranges for both new and existing houses.
Main Benefit
The principal benefit of this technology lies in its unique attributes and impressive performance milestones, which include:
- Elimination of refrigerants – no need for harmful chemicals.
 - No carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, supporting a cleaner environment.
 - Affordability alongside advanced silent operation.
 - Wide operating temperature ranges ideal for diverse building types.
 - Proven technical knowledge from TNO, backed by nearly 20 years of thermo acoustics experience.

History and Background
Founded in Alkmaar in late 2016 as a spin-off from TNO – a leading research organization in the EU – BlueHeart Energy has quickly cemented its reputation in deep tech. The collaboration with TNO has played an important role, as TNO holds a worldwide expertise in thermo acoustics, managing almost two decades of research and development in this field. It is essential to note that while TNO’s research laid the groundwork, BlueHeart Energy has continued to evolve and thrive independently, with its own development and engineering team generating valuable proprietary IP. This mix of respected background and modern technological ambition gives BlueHeart the credibility to transform the heating and cooling industry.
Technological Innovation and Milestones
Key milestones underscore the steady evolution of BlueHeart Energy’s technology. The design of the first market product, known as BLUEHEART, is now completed, and the first prototype unit is currently under construction and set to be optimized in 2023. The 0-series unit, boasting a capacity of 6kW, is expected to hit the market in 2024. Prior to this, in 2022, a testing prototype was scaled to 3kW entirely by BlueHeart’s team, showcasing the potential of thermo acoustics in a practical, scaled-up application. Dipping further into the past, in 2019, a collaborative effort between BlueHeart Energy and TNO led to the creation of a working prototype with a thermal capacity of 1kW. Even before this, in 2015, TNO developed a lab prototype with a modest capacity of 240W purely to prove the concept. Each milestone not only highlights technological progress but also hints at the exciting future steps in making thermo acoustics the underlying standard for heating and cooling systems.
Team and Expertise
The strength of BlueHeart Energy’s project lies in its diverse and international team, which is composed of more than 30 professionals from various disciplines. The team includes physicists, mechanical engineers, industrial engineers, electrical engineers, and energy systems specialists – some holding advanced degrees like PhDs in thermo acoustics. This mix of talent ensures that every technical aspect, from design to execution, is covered efficiently. The team’s ability to work collaboratively and push boundaries has been central to the success and continued innovation in this highly complex field.
Practical Applications and Future Vision
BlueHeart Energy’s vision extends far beyond a single technological breakthrough. With an ambition to decarbonize the heating and cooling of buildings, the company aims to reduce global CO2 emissions by 7%. The future looks bright as the use of thermo acoustics seeks to set a new standard – one that could help reduce up to 110Mt of CO2 emissions by 2050. While the initial focus remains on residential applications, there is an exciting plan to explore and develop new applications in the future. It is all about making our planet a better place to live by steering the energy transition in a sustainable direction… one breakthrough at a time.
