What is the Summerdown Project?
Summerdown Farms Ltd has been cultivating, harvesting, and distilling its very own Black Mitcham peppermint for nearly 30 years, all from a family-run farm nestled in the Hampshire countryside. This isn’t just any peppermint—it’s grown slowly and sustainably, resulting in a pure, invigorating taste and aroma that’s truly one-of-a-kind. The farm transforms this vibrant herb into an astonishingly aromatic, barrel-aged peppermint oil. This oil is the star ingredient in their award-winning range of chocolates, teas, candles, diffusers, and much more. The collection is designed to slow life down a bit and brighten up everyday moments with a unique, revitalising touch.

The Story Behind the Peppermint
The journey began back in 1995 when Sir Michael Colman traveled to America searching for Black Mitcham peppermint—a herb that had been native to England a century earlier but was notoriously difficult to grow. Captivated by its intense, nostalgic flavour, he brought back cuttings to Hampshire. With the help of his farm manager, Ian, they planted a small plot the size of a tennis court and patiently nurtured the plants. Over time, those original cuttings took root and adapted perfectly to the English soil and climate. Today, every single peppermint plant at Summerdown is a descendant of those original cuttings, giving the mint its refined and unique flavour and aroma.
From Farm to Fragrance and Flavour
Summerdown’s peppermint oil isn’t just about taste—it’s about creating an experience. The oil’s aromatic qualities make it a key ingredient in a wide range of products beyond just food and drink. From fragrant candles and diffusers to essential oils used by other makers, the farm’s peppermint oil adds a distinctive British touch to everything it touches. The slow, sustainable farming methods ensure that the oil’s purity and intensity remain unmatched, making it a favourite among those who appreciate robust, natural flavours and scents.
The Family’s Passion for Flavour
The Colman family has always been driven by a love of bold, piercing flavours. For years, their focus was mustard, but about 25 years ago, they shifted their passion to mint. This shift sparked the creation of Summerdown’s peppermint legacy. Their dedication to quality and sustainability shines through in every leaf and drop of oil produced. It’s a story of patience, passion, and a deep connection to the land—qualities that come through in every product they create.

Expanding the British Botanical Range
While peppermint remains the star, Summerdown also embraces other botanicals like lavender, camomile, and spearmint, weaving them into their product range to offer a broader sensory experience. These plants complement the peppermint perfectly, adding layers of fragrance and flavour that reflect the richness of British farming. This botanical diversity not only enriches the product line but also supports biodiversity on the farm, making Summerdown a true steward of the land and its natural gifts.
