Yerba Madre: Celebrating Regeneration Through Yerba Mate Culture

What is Yerba Madre?

Yerba Madre is more than just a beverage brand—it’s a celebration of Mother Earth and the vibrant energy of the yerba mate plant. Rooted deeply in South American tradition, this project honors the life-giving power of the yerba mate leaf and embraces the role of “madre” in nurturing a thriving yerba mate movement. Originally known as Guayakí, Yerba Madre has been sharing the culture and benefits of yerba mate since the mid-90s, building a community that spans continents and generations.

Main Benefits of Yerba Madre

Yerba Madre offers a unique, natural boost that’s both smooth and invigorating. Here’s what makes it stand out:

  • Provides a smooth energy boost without the jitters
  • Can improve focus and mental clarity
  • Contains a natural blend of caffeine (like coffee), theobromine (like chocolate), and polyphenols (like green tea)
  • Certified regenerative, organic, and fair trade ingredients that support people and the planet
  • Available in traditional steeped leaves and vibrant sparkling drinks flavored with real fruit juice

Commitment to Regeneration and Sustainability

Yerba Madre isn’t just about sustainability—it’s about regeneration. The project goes beyond minimizing harm by actively making a net-positive impact on the planet and its people. This means supporting the regeneration of priority ecosystems, including the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. Their approach tackles climate, water, waste and packaging, forests and biodiversity, and regenerative agriculture head-on. It’s a bold vision that aims to heal the earth while producing clean energy through yerba mate.

Strengthening Communities Through Yerba Mate

At its core, Yerba Madre is about people. The project supports the livelihoods and well-being of producers, local communities, and customers alike. This includes a strong focus on human rights, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. By honoring yerba mate culture and promoting fair working conditions, health, and nutrition, Yerba Madre builds a foundation of trust and respect. It’s a movement that fosters friendship, service, and environmental stewardship—values that have been part of the journey since the beginning.

The Story Behind Yerba Madre

The story began when co-founder Alex Pryor left Argentina to study food science at Cal Poly University. In 1996, he introduced yerba mate to David Karr, a Californian who instantly connected with the energizing properties and cultural heritage of the drink. Together, they dreamed of creating a business that could be a force for positive change. Fast forward to 2025, the company officially changed its name from Guayakí to Yerba Madre, keeping the same regenerative vision alive for nearly 30 years. From loose leaf to cans and bottles, their products carry the spirit of the Semillas and their commitment to regeneration.
