A cheap and effective plant-based protein.
Global needs for consumption are leading to overexploitation. In the last 150 years, the amount of natural resources used has grown by more than 190%. Yet, in 2017, one in nine people around the world did not get enough food. In order to feed 9.7 billion people, the world will need to produce 70% more calories by 2050. Noblegen Protein is a vertical fermentation solution that uses a microorganism called Euglena gracilis to improve its own biology and make a closed-loop solution that works well. Noblegen is working toward their goal of making a process that is driven by microbes and makes it possible to make large amounts of complete, non-animal, and cheap protein from locally grown starches like corn and cassava. The ability to make protein from starch could make a big difference in parts of the world where people don’t get enough food. It could also help solve big problems like deforestation caused by industrial agriculture and the overuse of water, land, and energy.
