A program to help people get clean stoves so they can live healthier lives.
More than 3 billion people around the world cook with solid fuels on open fires inside their homes. In many cases, there is no ventilation, so people are exposed to smoke, dust, and toxic gases that are made when the fuels are burned. This indoor pollution is a big reason why so many rural families have serious lung and breathing problems. In response, Microsol made a clean cookstove system with better heat efficiency and a chimney that sends the smoke straight out of the house. Microsol has been working on this solution for more than 12 years through two Programs of Activities registered under the Gold Standard: Qori Q’oncha (Peru), which started in 2008 and is the first improved cookstove Program registered in the international voluntary carbon market; and Utsil Naj (Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras).
