A biological way for the natural gas grid to store and move energy.
Peaks in electricity production are inevitable as the number of wind and solar plants grows. So, when it’s windy or sunny, too much electricity is made, and more and more of it can’t be sent into the grid. On the other hand, taking down traditional power plants leaves supply gaps when there isn’t much wind or sun. So, one of the biggest challenges of changing the energy system is coming up with and installing new ways to store energy for a long time. MicrobEnergy has made its own power-to-gas technology in order to deal with this problem. Electrolysis is a way that electricity can be used to make hydrogen. This hydrogen can be used right away, or it can be mixed with carbon dioxide from a biogas or sewage plant to make methane gas in a second step. Methane is the same chemically as natural gas, so it can be put into the natural gas grid in any amount. So, the infrastructure of the natural gas network can be used as a huge system for storing and moving energy. BiON helps make the world greener by turning the energy from the wind and sun into renewable gas. This makes a source of energy that is good for the climate and can be used everywhere.
Positive facts about BiON : Biological Methanation
A 2.5 MW power-to-gas-plant feeds 18000 MWh renewable gas into the gas grid every year – this saves 4000-5000 t CO2 per year,
In a 2.5 MW power-to-gas-plant (electrolysis capacity) 115 Nm3 renewable, synthetic methane per hour is produced and stored in the natural gas grid
1.8 million Nm3 sewage gas (65% methane/35% carbon dioxide) are processed annually in a 2.5 MW power-to-gas-plant
100% renewably produced gas, 97% methane product gas quality, 100% storable and reusable in the gas grid
92% reduction of CO2 emission compared to fossil fuel
80% overall efficiency of the process, if all the generated heat is used
50% increase in methane production from biogas plants
20 more years of secure income for farms
100% better than fossil energy
