IGS’s vertical farming solution makes it possible to grow crops indoors in a controlled environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Imagine a 300m2 field (for example, 50m X 60m). Then, cut the field into 50 pieces the size of a full-size snooker table (6m2 area). These sections, called Growth Trays with Lights (GTLs), are stacked about 250mm apart in two racking systems and put inside a superstructure to make a Growth Tower (GT). This superstructure is built to IGS’s specifications and is meant to be put up in places around the world that are structurally sound. IGS’s patented lighting, ventilation, and watering systems are in each GT. IGS’ cloud software is used to control and monitor the GT on-site or from afar. GTs come in heights of 6m, 9m, and 12m. For example, a 9m GT has a footprint of 40m2 and a growing area of about 320m2. With 12 crop cycles per year for crops like basil, two 9m GTs can grow enough basil to fill a football field. One hectare can be filled by two 12m GTs. Our solution can also grow broccoli seedlings that are ready to go into the field in 15 days, while traditional methods take six weeks.
Positive facts about Growth Towers
Our solution can operate in climates between -40°C and +50°C (from Finland to the UAE).
Two 12 m Growth Towers require a footprint that is just one hundredth of a hectare of land to achieve one hectare of cultivation area.
60% of the cultivation process is automated (level four, adaptive automation). Growth Towers are one of the few systems with 60% automation (adaptive automation). Many alternative vertical farming systems have an automation level of 40% or 20%.
By growing crops closer to the point of production or consumption our solution can reduce food transport miles by 96%.
94% less water (compared to greenhouse production). All water that is not used in the crops can be recycled and re-used.
0 (zero) pesticides, fungicides or herbicides are used in our solution.
Grow high quality crops 24/7 365 with total control of climate variables for consistent and predictable results.
Reduce growth cycles by 30-50% compared to glasshouse and open field farming. For example, Micro leaf 3 to 8 days; Baby leaf 14 to 30 days; Herb 13 to 38 days; Lettuce (head) 49 days.
Significantly reduce food waste in the food supply chain which currently contributes 30% of all GHG emissions. Eg, 95% of strawberry seedlings grown in UK are imported and contain pests and disease.
