A cheaper and more powerful electric mobility energy network for light vehicles in Africa.
Ampersand gives motorcycle taxi drivers in East Africa electric bikes and a network of places where they can swap out their batteries. A driver can buy or rent a motorcycle from Ampersand at a price that is comparable to what other gasoline companies charge. Ampersand is the one who owns the batteries and gives them to drivers as a service. Electricity is paid for the same way as gas: drivers only pay for what they use. When a driver needs a new battery, he or she can quickly switch it out at one of Ampersand’s many swap stations, without having to wait for the old one to charge. Since May 2019, 35 motorbikes and batteries have traveled more than 1.3 million km on the streets of Kigali. There are 7200 drivers who have signed up to work for Ampersand.
