A service that lets people pay for cooling rather than buy whole systems.
Cooling as a Service (CaaS) is an innovative business model that lets end users get access to clean and efficient cooling solutions without having to pay for them up front. This servitization model gets around the main market barriers that make it hard for sustainable cooling to catch on by letting customers pay a fixed fee per unit for the service they use. In the meantime, the technology provider still owns the system and is responsible for all costs related to running it. Through its CaaS initiative, the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE), with help from the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) and support from the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance, has sped up the adoption of the business model around the world in a wide range of sectors and industries, from industrial refrigeration and commercial air conditioning to agricultural and medical cold chains.
